Setting Up a Dial-Up Connection using ZTerm (Mac)

UBC IT offers two internet access services: Netinfo and Interchange. A Netinfo account is available free of cost to all current UBC students and allows twenty hours of dial-up PPP Internet access per month. Interchange accounts are available on a paid subscription basis to staff, faculty, students and alumni, as well as non-UBC customers.

This document explains how to set up ZTerm for use with either Netinfo or Interchange.

Step 1: Starting ZTerm

  1. Double Click on the Hard Drive icon on the desktop.
  2. Look for the ZTerm folder and double click it.
  3. The folder is now open, to start the program double click the ZTerm icon.

Step 2: Setting Up ZTerm

  1. Go to the Settings menu at the top of the window.
  2. Select Connection... from the pull down menu.
  3. In this menu screen complete the following:

    • In the space beside Service Name, enter Interchange or Netinfo depending on which service is going to be used.
    • In the space beside Phone Number, enter 604-822-1331 for Interchange or enter 604-822-4477 for Netinfo.
    • In the space beside Pre-dial init, enter 9 if you need to dial 9 to get an outside line or #70 to disable call waiting if you have that feature.
    • Data Rate depends on the speed of the modem being used. If using a 14.4 modem change Data Rate to 19200, if using a 28.8 modem change Data Rate to 38400, and if using a 56K modem change Data Rate to 57600.
    • All of the other settings can be left at their default state. (ie. Do not enter in your Account username and password at this point.)
    • When all this is complete, Click OK.

Step 3: Setting Up the Terminal

  1. In this section make sure that the box beside VT100TM Keypad is marked with an "X" and the circle beside the VT100TM is filled in with a black dot.

  2. When these checks are made, Click OK.

Step 4: Setting the Transfer Options

  1. In this menu make sure that Send and Receive are set to ZModem.

Step 5: Setting the Port

  1. Under Serial Port, make sure Modem Port is chosen.
  2. In the Initialize space, if different Init String is known, use it. Otherwise, use the default Init String - ATE1 V1 ^M or AT&F
  3. Click OK when done.

Step 6: Saving the Setup and Dialing Up

  1. To save the current setup, go the Dial menu. From the pull down menu select Save Setup. The current setup is now saved onto this menu and can be used anytime by just clicking on it.
  2. Now that the setup is saved, it is time to connect. But first to get to this menu. From the menu bar above, pull down Dial once again and this time select Directory...

  3. To dial up, highlight the setup that was saved and Click Dial to connect.
  4. The modem should now dial and connect you to the Internet.
