BCNET builds high-performance networks for British Columbia's research and education community - enabling connections, collaboration, and innovation by facilitating technological advancement. BCNET has been in operation since 1986, and UBC is a founding member of this not-for-profit society. UBC makes use of dark fibre to obtain its networking services through BCNET. This enables the university to have multiple gigabit Ethernet connections in support of the academic, research, and ResNet networks. Because of BCNET, UBC researchers are able to request and use dedicated lightpaths of 1Gbps or greater for high bandwidth demand projects. UBC personnel, staff, and faculty are integral to the support and network engineering of BCNET, and also have active participation in the BCNET Board and Advisory Committees.
