Prevent future data breaches! Follow UBC Policy and Encryption Requirements

The BC Ministry of Education has recently announced that an unencrypted hard drive containing 3.4 million of student records from 1986 to 2009 has been misplaced. These records have sensitive information, such as health and behavior issues, birth dates, citizenship status, and GPAs. More information about this loss can be found on the BC Government website: https://news.gov.bc.ca/releases/2015MTICS0026-001575. Incidents such as this can happen to any organization including UBC. The implications of losing such sensitive data can lead to undue stress, financial risk, and loss of invaluable data from years of research. This is a reminder for all of us to take a closer look at how we handle data and ensure we are following UBC policy on the protection of personal data.
