Data Centre Co-Location Service FAQs

How do I start the process of applying for space?
To begin the application process, please contact the IT Service Centre Help Desk. A service ticket will be created for you, and we will contact you with more information.

Do I have to move my computing Hardware to the University Data Centre?
No, it is not compulsory to utilize the facility, however the new University Data Centre is very power efficient and incorporates a low maintenance cooling infrastructure. The more people who use the University Data Centre, the more savings are realised by the University as a whole.

What type of equipment can be hosted?
Any server, storage or high performance computing equipment can be hosted by the University Data Centre. The only restriction is that the equipment must be rack mountable and utilize a front to rear cooling configuration. Shelving can be supported for non-rack mountable equipment and will be discussed at time of occupancy.

Is the facility secure and how do I get access?
The University Data Centre incorporates the UBC iClass system for access control. All entries are logged and the facility has monitored cameras throughout.

Additional security at the rack level can be arranged which would involve locking hardware on a rack by rack basis. This extra security would be an extra cost to the tenant.

I don't know how much space I need for the future, can I pre-book space for future expansion?
Yes, space can be booked for future use, however fees will be levied at time of booking.

Can the facility staff help with installation?
University Data Centre staff can help with the logistics of your move, however the tenant is responsible for moving equipment into the facility. No installation services are offered, but the facility does have on-site equipment for moving servers, including server lifts, for the tenants use.

How do I hook up the network to my equipment?
At time of requesting space a dedicated networking meeting will take place ensuring your networking needs are accommodated. The facility comes network ready and has a certified pre-installed cabling system. Unique needs will be discussed on an as required basis that could result in extra charges (e.g. dedicated 10G links).

Will I get charged for Power and Cooling costs?
No, all costs are one-time only and no ongoing fees will be charged.

How long can my equipment stay?
The University Data Centre is operated as a cost recovery asset, with that in mind a max tenancy for the same equipment is set at 10 years. New tariffs will be levied when the equipment reaches 10 years of occupancy or when the equipment is replaced or has reached end of life, whichever occurs first.
