PPTP VPN Setup Documents
PPTP VPN service is still being offered at UBC Okanagan (and the PPTP VPN service at UBC Vancouver was decommissioned May 2010). Therefore, the following setup documents apply only to UBC Okanagan clients (vpn.ok.ubc.ca).
Windows
- Windows Vista
- Windows XP
- Windows 2000
- Windows ME
- Windows 98
- Nortel Contivity VPN Client for Windows
- Zone Alarm for Windows
Macintosh
Linux
Palm
Pocket PC
If you are experiencing problems connecting to the UBC VPN service from your home network, you may need to allow the following types of traffic from the VPN server (vpn.ubc.ca):
- IP protocols 47 and 50 (these are for GRE and ESP)
- TCP port 1723 (this is for PPTP)
- UDP port 500 (this is for isakmp)
Some home routers will allow for these types of rules, and some will not. Some routers simply have a radio button for allowing VPN connections. If this is the case, then is should be enabled.
Also note that some home routers will not permit more than one concurrent VPN session at a time.
